How to Determine if an Oil Painting is Modern or Vintage

Vintage art usually has dark stretcher bars, and exhibits craquelure, which is a fine pattern of cracks. When you view it under a magnifier, antique art tends to feature dots in an irregular pattern. The vintage art pattern differs significantly from a regular one, commonly found in modern art.
Be Thorough When Identifying a Painting as Antique Art
Though sometimes an indicator of antique art, there is not always a clear correlation between vintage art and the darkness of a canvas. Also, forgers have been known to attach their forged artwork to older canvases to make the artwork appear older. Plus, some have artificially created the appearance of craquelure.
